Walking School Bus initiative launching in Loughrea

Walking School Bus initiative launching in Loughrea

Sustainable Energy West and Naomh Breandain Credit Union have collaborated with a number of stakeholders in the community on establishing a Walking School Bus in Loughrea town. A walking School bus is a safe way for children to walk to school. It is good for children allowing them to have regular daily exercise and reinforcing the habit of walking for shorter journeys. It is also good for the environment – with less congestion and traffic, which means less pollution.

St Brendan’s Boy’s NS and St Ita’s NS are active participants in this project planned to launch in the coming weeks. Galway County Council, St Brigid’s College and St Raphael’s College are also involved in this initiative. For this to be a success we need the support and interest from families and people in the community. There must be sufficient adults to cover each journey to and from school each day for every route established. Once started, the bus will operate every day during term time, whatever the weather.
