Loughrea’s Ava Conerney double award winner at 59th BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition
Transition Year student Ava Conerney, represented St. Brigid’s College Loughrea at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition Finals in the RDS this past week with her project titled G.E.T. Together – Girls in Engineering and Technology’.
Ava picked up two Awards in the RDS on Friday evening, 13 January. As well as winning the Third Place Award in her individual intermediate category, Ava received a Special Award from the Department of Education and Science to acknowledge her outstanding research under her project title G.E.T. Together – Girls in Engineering and Technology.
Ava’s project, G.E.T. Together – Girls in Engineering & Technology, is a statistical analysis of factors impacting girls choosing Engineering & Technology subjects in secondary school and a plan to improve female participation in these areas. Her aim is to use Behavioural & Social Sciences research to investigate and recommend better methods of increasing the number of girls in Engineering & Technology subjects, courses and careers in Ireland.
BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition
‘The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition is much more than a competition – it is the experience of a lifetime for the students and teachers who take part. Designed to raise schools’ engagement in the critical subjects of science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM), the Exhibition calls upon students aged 12-19 years from all over the island of Ireland to showcase innovative science and technology project.
