Loughrea Community Lights Committee announce Christmas Lights plans
Discover Loughrea first Christmas post of 2021, and a very important one it is for all #Loughrea residents, visitors and businesses…
The Loughrea Community Lights Committee are like our very own Christmas elves, busy working behind the scene to help light up Loughrea this festive season. The committee members include, Ronan Dervan DERVANS FASHIONS Loughrea; Martin Dolan Martin Dolan Expert Electrical; Sean McDonald McD’s Garden & Home; Geraldine Bane Dignity Funeral Care – Loughrea & Portumna; David McDonnell Naomh Breandan Credit Union; Billy Kelly Billy’s Discount Store; Charlie’s Bar Loughrea; Cllr Michael ‘Moegie’ Maher and Cllr. Shane Curley.
The committee’s objective was clear…’to acquire and maintain sustainable-energy efficient LED Christmas lights, events lights and displays for Loughrea and surrounding parishes.’ Based on this, they have a 5 year plan on a phased basis – ‘new lighting on, Main Street, 10m high Christmas tree in the Fair Green, the Walks, Barrack Street, The Long Point, Corry’s Field, connect the two roundabouts, plans to include specific features on the Lake, and lighting surrounding areas in Bullaun, Kiltullagh, Kilreekil, Kilchreest, Kilnadeema.’
In order to do this, Loughrea Community Lights have been approved €116,443.25 in funding by Galway Rural Development and the Department of Rural & Community Development for the 2021 upgrade of Loughrea’s Christmas lighting. However, this is 75% funding for a planned project of over €155,000. The committee ‘has been receiving financial contributions and pledges from willing supporters and will be approaching many more to help bridge the gap in current funds and what is needed to realise this ambitious project.’
