Galway County Council announce Corry’s Field Official Reopening

Galway County Council are delighted to announce the official reopening of Corry’s Field Park in Loughrea at 1pm on Monday 17th April 2023, following significant development works over the past six weeks. The reopening will be hosted by Cathaoirleach Michael “Moegie” Maher.

The Department of Transport awarded Galway County Council a major grant of over €200,000 for the redevelopment of the footways throughout the park. The works were completed by Michael O’Malley Tarmacadam Contractors Limited Castlebar, monitored by Ecologist Caroline Shiel and Archaeologist Martin Fitzpatrick and supervised by the Loughrea Municipal District technical and administration staff.

The walkway has been a wonderful amenity for Loughrea Town for many years and the recent work represents a significant enhancement of this amenity. The construction work is the final phase of a project that has been in the pipeline for several years. An outline of the project timeline is as follows;

• 2019 – Initial in-house design

• 2020 – Funding allocated under the “July Stimulus” Active Travel Measures

• 2021 – Completion of all necessary environmental reports etc.

• 2022 – An Bord Pleanála approval granted

• 2023 – Construction work complete

Many Loughrea Municipal District staff have played a role in progressing this project but I would particularly like to thank Brendan Sheehy (Loughrea/Portumna Area Engineer 2019 – 2021) and John Coyle (Loughrea/Portumna Area Engineer 2022 – 2023) for their significant input in their respective time overseeing this project.
